Raylan Givens was born to Arlo and Francis Givens in Harlan, Kentucky. His youth was anything but perfect as he watched his father beat his mother right up until her death. With Arlo in and out of prison, Raylan was raised by his mother's sister Helen. She would eventually marry Arlo, a decision Raylan was never comfortable with. 

As a teenager, Raylan played baseball and worked in the local mines. When he turned nineteen, he left Harlan behind and went to college, and got married. However, his marriage ended in divorce. 

Raylan's career as a Deputy US Marshall was anything but perfect. He had a mentality that was often reserved for sheriffs in the Old West. His "shoot you where you stand" attitude got him into some trouble.

An incident in Miami got him shipped to the Louisville, Kentucky Marshall office, even though he had promised himself he'd never go back home.
